Learning Relationships

"I just wanted to write this email as a thank you to all the wonderful staff at

Cape Naturaliste College, and for enabling me to prosper during my final years

of high school. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and guidance that

the school gave me over the last 2 years, and can not thank both you and the staff

at the college enough. When I came to the school in Year 11, I was incredibly

nervous, as I was venturing onto new territory and essentially starting fresh.

However, the college made the transition seamless and stress-free, as I

immediately felt comfortable thanks to all the support that had been offered.

Over the next 2 years, I was reintroduced to my love of learning, thanks to the wonderful teachers that the college offers."

Graduate of 2016, currently studying medicine.

Why

The fusion of the school's priority areas, learning is a two way relationship where students give and take from staff. Teachers, in kind, are flexible and aware that students have many competing influences in their life but that, ultimately, their education is the foundation for them all. Few careers give the depth of understanding and human interaction that teaching offers, and staff hold a reverence for students and their uniqueness.

What

By being respected and included, CNC students ultimately understand that staff are on their side. While these struggles can be long, the rewards are deep and a positive, collegiate workplace is just one of those. By not rushing to judgement, looking to deescalate conflict, and by giving time to answer questions and build relationships, staff show students that they are valued.  The consistency, care and compassion of staff bolsters students' growth as they move through the College.

How

Conversations and a range of styles typify teachers at CNC. It is rare for a student to go through Cape Naturaliste College without having made a real connection with a staff member who has guided, supported, mentored and/or inspired them. These connections, while deep and lasting, are formed through simple interactions and daily practice. A consistent attitude, curiosity towards students' lives and a shared joy in their success are the foundations of learning relationships.
